WHAT IS MEDICAL TATTOOING?
Medical tattooing, or medical micropigmentation, involves a specialized method of implanting medical pigment in the skin. Medical tattooing is a minimally invasive treatment option that has many applications for cosmetic enhancement, including:
CONCEALING SKIN ABNORMALITIES – Pigments can be mixed to match your natural skin color, allowing for effective concealment of many skin irregularities. Medical tattooing is often performed on age spots, birthmarks, and pigmentation anomalies, including those caused by vitiligo.

Medical tattooing can revise a wide range of skin irregularities, but some skin conditions and pigmentation concerns may require a more complex or aggressive treatment approach.
Patients with raised scars, scars that are darker in color than the surrounding skin, or scars that receive frequent sun exposure may be better candidates for alternative scar revision procedures. Scar revision treatments, including medical tattooing, should not be performed on scars or stretch marks that are less than one year old and/or have not stabilized in appearance.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
MEDICAL TATTOOING: WHAT TO EXPECT
First, you will meet with your medical tattoo artist in a consultation to plan your custom medical tattoo. Dr. Emer’s medical tattoo artists work closely with you to select the optimal pigments, tattoo design, and tattoo placement for your desired outcome.
Your medical tattooing treatment will be performed in-office at Dr. Emer’s West Hollywood medical practice. To start, the medical tattoo artist will review and finalize the details of your tattoo. Next, a topical anesthetic can be applied to minimize discomfort during the procedure. After preparing your custom-colored pigments, the medical tattoo artist will expertly implant the pigments to best resolve your cosmetic concerns.
At the end of the session, the medical tattoo artist will dress the treatment area. You will receive personalized aftercare instructions regarding how to bandage and clean your tattoo, as well as specific guidelines for bathing, skin care, and the use of any prescribed topical ointments or creams.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER MEDICAL TATTOOING
Medical tattooing involves minimal downtime and discomfort. Immediately after your medical tattooing session, the treatment site may appear to have very dark coloring, and the area may be tender. These symptoms will diminish naturally as healing progresses.
With proper care, medical tattoos can heal within about 10 days. To prevent fading and support healing, it is important to closely follow all aftercare instructions and to protect the treatment site from:
- Prolonged exposure to water
- Direct sunlight
- Contact with chlorinated water and/or salt water
- Skin care products, including soaps and lotions
- Excessive friction and force
MEDICAL TATTOOING RESULTS
Medical tattooing often requires two or three sessions to achieve the desired coverage and/or depth of color. Some fading of the pigment is to be expected in the first 10-14 days after a medical tattoo session. The color will stabilize within four to six weeks after treatment. You can then schedule a follow-up tattoo session with your medical tattoo artist if any adjustments or enhancements are needed to optimize your results.
Medical tattoos can last many years with proper care. Keeping the tattooed skin hydrated and consistently using sunscreen can help prevent fading and promote long-lasting results.
EYEBROWS
This patient came in wanting darker, more defined eyebrows. We used microblading on the eyebrows to give her more depth and shape as well as mimic the natural look of brow hair but with a darker color.
ELBOW SCAR
This patient came to us hoping to lessen the appearance of a scar on their elbow. Using medical tattooing, we were able to use pigment and camouflage the scar, making it much less noticeable.
HAIR TRANSPLANT SCAR
This patient came in after having a hair transplant that left a noticeable scar. Using medical tattooing, we were able to use pigment to create what looks like hair follicles that match his natural follicles, leaving the scar less distinguishable.
FACELIFT SURGERY SCAR
This patient recently had facelift surgery and came in hoping to hide the scar by the hairline and ear. With medical tattooing, we were able to camouflage the surgical scar.
EYEBROWS
This patient had thin, almost hairless eyebrows and wanted to give them a more distinct look and shape. With microblading, we were able to create hairlike strokes for a much fuller and darker set of brows.
BREAST LIFT SCAR
This patient had scarring from a previous breast lift procedure. With medical tattooing, we were able to restore the nipple and areola back to the correct coloring and dimensions it once had.
STRETCH MARKS
This patient came in wanting to reduce the look of stretch marks on their mid to lower back. By performing medical tattooing, we were able to camouflage the marks for dramatic aesthetic improvements.
FOREARM SCAR
This patient came to me with a severe forearm scar hoping to reduce noticeability of discoloration. By using medical tattooing and scar lightening, we were able to make the scar much less visible.
BUTTOCK STRETCH MARKS
This patient came in concerned about stretch marks on the buttock and hoped to lessen their appearance. We were able to significantly reduce the appearance of the stretch marks with medical tattooing.
CALF MUSCLE STRETCH MARKS
This patient had stretch marks covering both calf muscles and came to us hoping to minimize their visibility. We were able to mix pigments to match her skin tone and then used medical tattooing to successfully camouflage the stretch marks.
BUTTOCK AND THIGHS STRETCH MARKS
This patient came in with visible stretch marks on the buttock and backs of the thighs with the goal of reducing their overall appearance. With medical tattooing, we were able to blend pigment and implant it into both areas, which allowed for a reduction in the appearance of the stretch marks.
