HAND REJUVENATION

Conveniently located to serve Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Los Angeles, NYC, and Miami.

Cosmetic hand rejuvenation treatments are essential for maintaining a youthful appearance. Though many people focus only on the face when it comes to anti-aging protocols, neglecting the skin of the hands could mean that you are revealing your true age with every handshake. Fortunately, there are quick, minimally invasive methods that can significantly improve mild skin laxity, volume loss, and other conditions that cause our hands to look aged. In West Hollywood, board-certified dermatologist and skincare specialist Dr. Jason Emer provides highly customized, non-surgical hand rejuvenation procedures that can provide natural-looking volumization in as little as one treatment.

WHAT IS HAND REJUVENATION?

Cosmetic hand rejuvenation treatments help to smooth, strengthen, and beautify the skin on the backs of our hands. The backs of our hands receive more sun exposure than most other parts of our body, which causes the skin to age more rapidly. Signs of aging appear on the hands in various ways, including:

  • Volume loss
  • Reduced skin elasticity
  • Thinning skin
  • Increased exposure of veins and tendons
  • A thin, emaciated, or malnourished appearance

Dr. Emer’s hand rejuvenation protocols often involve multiple techniques and procedures. Strategically combining complementary treatments allows Dr. Emer to restore volume, improve the quality and texture of the skin, reduce wrinkles, and minimize the appearance of veins and tendons that cause our hands to look aged.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

RADIESSE FOR HAND REJUVENATION

Radiesse is a calcium-based filler that is FDA-approved to smooth facial wrinkles and folds and to correct volume loss in the backs of the hands. Radiesse is comprised of calcium microspheres that minimize the visibility of tendons and veins and give an immediate lift and plumping effect. In addition to improving volume, Radiesse also stimulates long-term collagen production to aid in skin tightening and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Radiesse improvements last for approximately 12 to 15 months. For optimal hand rejuvenation with Radiesse, Dr. Emer often advises annual treatments to maintain consistent results.

RESTYLANE LYFT FOR HAND REJUVENATION

Restylane Lyft is the first and only hyaluronic acid (HA) filler that is FDA-approved to rejuvenate the backs of the hands. Restylane Lyft uses HA, a naturally occurring substance in your skin, to revolumize and add fullness to the treatment area. With a larger median particle size than other Restylane products, Lyft is specially engineered for lifting and contouring treatments.

Restylane Lyft results can last for up to six months. While the duration of the improvements depends on your metabolism, diet, and exercise habits, two to three Restylane Lyft hand rejuvenation treatments per year will keep your hands looking youthful.

WHAT IS HAND REJUVENATION WITH FILLERS?

Injectable dermal fillers are the foundation of most minimally invasive hand rejuvenation procedures. Dermal fillers are most often associated with facial sculpting. However, fillers can also be injected to reduce signs of aging in many other common problem areas.

Just as Dr. Emer can use dermal fillers to replace lost volume in the cheeks or to fill nasolabial folds, he can inject fillers into the backside of the hands to achieve a plumper, smoother, and dramatically more youthful look. Dr. Emer often recommends hand rejuvenation with fillers as a quick, minimally invasive, no-downtime solution for:

  • Replacing lost volume
  • Filling wrinkles
  • Minimizing the appearance of veins and tendons
  • Smoothing out crepey skin
  • Stimulating collagen production for long-term improvements in skin texture

HOW DOES HAND REJUVENATION WITH FILLERS WORK?

Wrinkles, skin laxity, and protruding veins and tendons are often the result of decreased collagen production and lost volume due to the natural aging process. Dr. Emer uses dermal fillers like Radiesse and Restylane Lyft to minimize wrinkles and tighten loose skin caused by volume loss. Dr. Emer can also use fillers to increase volume in the hollows around tendons and larger veins. Adding volume in these areas helps to camouflage veins and tendons and to smooth out crepey skin and wrinkles.

Due to the large number of veins and tendons running through the hands, it is essential that hand rejuvenation procedures are performed by an experienced, skilled professional like Dr. Emer. Dr. Emer understands the importance of injecting dermal fillers superficially to avoid the veins, nerves, and tendon sheaths (the layers of connective tissue that protect the tendons) deep beneath the skin. Dr. Emer also avoids placing fillers in the fingers, where the skin is too thin for injection.

HAND REJUVENATION WITH FILLERS: WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT

Dr. Emer performs hand rejuvenation treatments with fillers at his Beverly Hills medical practice. This quick procedure is minimally invasive and well-tolerated by the majority of patients.

First, Dr. Emer will carefully identify the ideal injection sites. Then, he uses a blunt-tipped cannula to deliver the filler. The cannula glides easily beneath the skin and under the blood vessels as Dr. Emer strategically injects tiny aliquots (or “small matzo balls”) of filler in the area between the knuckles and the wrist.

Injecting fillers with a needle is more commonplace than using a cannula. However, Dr. Emer has found that using a cannula instead of a needle helps to reduce pain and minimize swelling and bruising post-treatment.

Most patients experience a pinching sensation or mild discomfort during the injections. For others, the treatment can be moderately painful. To help alleviate pain, Dr. Emer combines the filler with lidocaine. Lidocaine is an anesthetic that numbs the area once injected.

To ensure even distribution throughout the treated area, Dr. Emer lightly massages the filler once it is injected. Adding lidocaine to the filler gives the solution a thinner, more viscous consistency, which makes it easier for Dr. Emer to massage the product across the back of the hands for the most aesthetic, natural-looking results.

During the post-injection massage, Dr. Emer uses a “tenting” technique, in which he pinches the skin upwards. This method allows Dr. Emer to target specific low-volume areas safely and effectively. Warming up the hands immediately after treatment also helps to achieve optimal distribution of the filler.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HAND REJUVENATION TREATMENT

There is minimal downtime with a hand rejuvenation procedure. Although you may experience redness, swelling, and/or tenderness in the area for up to two weeks, patients can return to their everyday activities immediately after treatment.

HOW LONG DO HAND REJUVENATION RESULTS LAST?

On average, hand rejuvenation with fillers provides results that last between 6 and 12 months, depending on the filler used. Patients who diet and exercise regularly may experience greater volume loss and more rapid aging in the hands and therefore may require more frequent touch-ups and maintenance treatments. Dr. Emer can maximize the duration of improvements by pairing fillers with complementary treatments that improve the strength and appearance of your skin.

Dr. Emer has extensive experience with dermal fillers for cosmetic enhancement. His injection technique is highly refined, and he is meticulous in selecting the right type of filler and optimal dosage for each unique patient.

While he can provide visible results with fillers alone, Dr. Emer has found that the most effective approach to rejuvenating the hands is a customized, combination treatment that blends multiple methodologies and innovative techniques. Dr. Emer often pairs hand rejuvenation with Radiesse or Restylane Lyft with:

Microdroplet injections of Belotero Balance, a soft tissue filler that integrates completely into the tissue to improve crepey skin and fine wrinkles that occur most often around the eyes and mouth as well as on the hands, neck, and chest.

Non-ablative (Fraxel or Halo) or ablative (Erbium or CO2) laser resurfacing to promote skin tightening, visibly improve wrinkles and mild skin laxity, and enhance skin texture and tone.

Powerful skin resurfacing treatments that help to remove deeper layers of sun damage, sun spots, and scars, shrink pores, and stimulate long-term collagen production.

Microneedling radiofrequency (RF) devices like InMode Fractora, Morpheus8, or EndyMed Intensif, which deliver RF energy subdermally to tighten and rejuvenate the skin, improve surface texture, and enhance collagen production.

Fractional or nanofractional RF devices like Venus Viva and Skinfinity for textural improvements and skin tightening.

Autologous fat transfer or Renuva Adipose Matrix synthetic fat grafting to create small-volume improvements and correct any irregularities, indentations, or scars in the skin.

Chemical peels such as RevePeel, Cosmelan, or Enlighten to maintain the tightening and brightening achieved through laser skin resurfacing, improve hyperpigmentation, and accelerate cellular turnover to remove dead and precancerous skin cells, soften texture, smooth the skin, and reduce pores and fine lines. The ReveSkin Enlighten Peel can be purchased for at-home use following an in-person or virtual consultation with Dr. Jason Emer or a member of his staff.

Mesotherapy, which delivers hydrating nutrients and serums through superficial micro-injections, plumping the skin and giving an overall more youthful appearance.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which works in conjunction with lasers, RF devices, and microneedling to improve wrinkles and sun damage.

Venus Versa IPL to address sun damage.

Post-procedure healing treatments such as LightStim LED Light Therapy, which can increase blood circulation, accelerate healing, and help improve overall skin quality.

A patient-tailored daily skincare and sun protection protocol to keep the treated skin exfoliated, hydrated, and bright.
