Candidacy for dermal fillers can be determined in a consultation with Dr. Emer. He will want to learn about your cosmetic concerns, medical history, and expectations for treatment. He will also need to assess the structure and tissues in the proposed treatment area. In general, ideal candidates for dermal fillers are in good physical health, do not smoke, and are committed to following all pre- and post-treatment instructions provided by Dr. Emer.

DERMAL FILLER PROCEDURE
Dr. Emer’s patients not only love their dermal filler results, they also love that the procedure is quick and doesn’t require time off work to recover. Most dermal filler appointments take less than an hour, and you will be able to continue on with your day after the treatment.
When you arrive to your dermal filler appointment, Dr. Emer will review the treatment areas and establish the optimal injection sites. Next, an antibacterial solution is applied to the injection sites. Most patients easily tolerate the injections, but a topical numbing agent can be used at this stage to minimize any discomfort.
With each injection, Dr. Emer massages the area and evaluates the results to ensure a natural-looking outcome. Once he has completed the injections, he will provide any applicable aftercare instructions.

WHICH DERMAL FILLER IS BEST FOR ME?
If Dr. Emer determines that you are a good candidate for dermal fillers, he will use his extensive experience and knowledge of available fillers to develop your treatment plan. He may recommend hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers, calcium-based filler, collagen-based filler, and/or silicone-based fillers as needed to best achieve a patient’s desired outcome.
HA fillers have a gel-like consistency and work to plump the skin by improving and maintaining hydration. HA fillers often contain lidocaine to reduce any post-treatment discomfort. Radiesse has a base of calcium hydroxylapatite, which naturally occurs in our bones. Radiesse has a thicker consistency than HA fillers, and can be a great option for adding volume to restore a youthful look to the back of the hands, smoothing nasolabial folds, and addressing various facial folds and wrinkles. Calcium-based fillers tend to last longer than HA fillers, with results often lasting about a year.
Bellafill contains tiny polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) spheres that form a support structure under the skin. Bellafill also contains collagen, which promotes firm, healthy skin. Patients can expect semi-permanent volume restoration effects from Bellafill.
Sculptra is a dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid. This substance boosts collagen production as well as treating creases, deep wrinkles, and folds. Retreatment will be needed after about two years to maintain your results.
Dr. Emer has successfully used silicone injections with many patients for facial sculpting and rejuvenation. Made of medical-grade silicone oil, this type of filler can provide permanent improvements. Dr. Emer uses a microdroplet technique to gradually build up a sunken area and increase volume to smooth out wrinkles.
A patient’s body fat can be transferred from one part of the body to a treatment site as an alternative method of restoring lost volume or augmenting a facial feature. Unlike HA fillers, Radiesse, Bellafill, and silicone injections, fat grafting is a surgical procedure.
Fat grafting requires liposuction to extract the excess body fat that is then purified and injected. For patients who want long-lasting results and an all-natural filler, fat grafting can be a good option.
