AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Candidates are typically men and women who are over the age of 40. It is less common for younger patients to seek lower eyelid surgery since they generally will not have experienced a significant loss of skin elasticity.
Cosmetic lower eyelid concerns in younger patients can often be resolved with non-surgical eyelid rejuvenation. However, the aging process affects everyone differently, and eye bag surgery can be an appropriate intervention for younger patients who develop puffiness and under-eye bags at an earlier age.
To be considered a good candidate for this procedure, you must be free of any health conditions that interfere with the body’s healing process. Smoking impedes healing, so you must also be a non-smoker or willing to abstain from smoking for an extended period of time.

HOW IS LOWER EYELID SURGERY PERFORMED?

Every lower blepharoplasty procedure requires the use of anesthesia to ensure the comfort of the patient. Prior to your surgery, your options for anesthesia will be explained to you, so you and our plastic surgeon can select the best choice for your needs.

The next step is to make the necessary incisions. Incisions will be made on the inside of the eyelid or right below the lower lash line, depending on which surgical approach is optimal for you. Based on your facial structure and tissue, one of the following methods will be used:

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty with fat repositioning

This approach leaves no visible scar and is only used when skin excision is not required. A discreet incision on the inside of the lower lid provides access to the under-eye fat pads. The fat pads can then be repositioned to restore youthful contours and fill under-eye hollows.

Transcutaneous blepharoplasty with fat repositioning

This technique, which involves creating a skin flap to access and reposition fat, is often preferable for patients with more aged skin in the lower eyelid.

EYELID LIFT RECOVERY

Eyelid surgery recovery typically involves seven to 14 days of downtime. Dr. Emer will closely monitor your recovery and provide guidance regarding when you can return to work and resume your normal activities.

To accelerate the healing process following eyelid surgery, Dr. Emer recommends various restorative treatments, including IV Hydration Therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), oxygen facials, LightStim LED Light Therapy, and a customized skincare protocol.

EYELID SURGERY RESULTS

You can expect to see initial eyelid lift results after about two weeks. Final results are typically achieved after two or three months when the area has healed completely.

LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY RECOVERY

Some discomfort, bruising, and swelling can be expected during the first several days of your lower blepharoplasty recovery. Patients may also experience dry eyes following their procedure. When used as recommended by your surgeon, eye drops, cold compresses, and other therapies can provide relief from these symptoms.

It is important to follow all aftercare instructions carefully and to allow your body time to rest. Follow-up appointments will allow us to monitor your recovery and advise you when you can safely increase your activity levels and return to your normal routine.
