WHAT IS A MALE FACELIFT?

A rhytidectomy, or facelift, for men is a surgical procedure that alters and repositions facial tissue to resolve signs of aging in the midface and lower face. The goal of this surgery is to restore youthful, masculine facial contours.

Only in more recent years has the facelift become a relatively common treatment among men. The rising popularity of the male facelift is, in part, a testament to the evolution of the facelift procedure.

In the past, surgical facelift techniques were limited and did little more than pull the skin taut and remove the excess. The outcome tended to be a windswept, stretched look. Facial features frequently appeared distorted, since the procedure only lifted the skin. Facelifts were associated with an “overdone” look that made the surgery particularly unappealing to men.

Fortunately, modern facelift techniques make it possible to achieve remarkable improvements in such a way that no one will know that you had facial plastic surgery unless you tell them. As a result, rhytidectomy has become a much more attractive option for male patients.

WHAT CAN A FACELIFT FOR MEN TREAT?

A male facelift can be performed to address many cosmetic concerns in the lower face and midface, including:

  • Drooping cheeks
  • Lack of jawline definition
  • Loose and/or excess skin
  • Wrinkles and lines
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Fat deposits
  • Lax facial muscles
Facelift surgery does not address sagging or wrinkling in the upper face. Men who have hooded eyelids, a heavy brow, or forehead creases may be advised to combine facelift surgery with a brow lift, upper blepharoplasty, and/or lower blepharoplasty.
Though a facelift for men can create a more sculpted, angular jawline, it will not resolve a double chin, turkey neck, neck wrinkles, or neck bands. If there is considerable excess skin and fat along the jawline and under the chin, a neck lift can be paired with a male facelift to carve out sharper, more aesthetic jaw and neck contours.

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE FOR A MALE FACELIFT?

Most male facelift patients are between the ages of 40-65. However, there is no one-size-fits-all answer regarding the best age for a male facelift. Instead, the ideal age varies greatly based on a patient’s:
Genetics play a role in the way the face ages. Some men maintain a youthful look well into their 50’s, while others can have significant sagging in their late 30’s or early 40’s.
Sun exposure can contribute to faster facial aging, so men who spend much of their time outdoors and are not consistent about applying sunscreen may need a facelift earlier in life. Smoking, drinking, and other unhealthy habits may also accelerate facial aging.
The prevalence of younger men who choose a facelift over non-surgical treatments is on the rise. For some of these men, it is more appealing or practical to have a single procedure that lasts for many years than it is to go in for treatments every few months.
There are also many male patients who are apprehensive about undergoing surgery and would prefer to rely on non-surgical alternatives until a more intensive intervention is absolutely necessary to produce their desired look.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE MALE FACELIFT

Even though greater numbers of men are choosing to have facelift surgery, only a small number of plastic surgeons have the dedicated training, education, and experience to successfully execute a facelift for men. Male patients should be very discerning when choosing a surgeon to perform this procedure.

We have a refined approach to male facelift surgery that draws on knowledge of male facial anatomy and the angles and proportions associated with an attractive, masculine facial appearance. Some key factors that are considered when planning a male facelift procedure are:

Incision locations and surgical methods for male facelifts must be selected with consideration for beard hair, receding hairlines, and sideburns. The goal is to avoid disrupting hair growth and to minimize post-surgery incision marks.
A facelift for men is more challenging than facelifts for women. Compared to women, men have thicker facial skin, stronger facial muscles, and a higher concentration of blood vessels. These attributes require specific surgical techniques and cautionary measures. We safely and skillfully navigate the complex aspects of male facial anatomy.

Though the social stigma surrounding cosmetic enhancement for men is less pervasive than in the past, it is common for male patients to have heightened concerns about others knowing they had a cosmetic procedure.

A deep plane facelift is often ideal for male patients, as it repositions both the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer of facial tissue and the skin. This approach is associated with more natural-looking outcomes than less advanced techniques.

The deep plane facelift is also particularly effective for correcting jowls in the lower face, which are one of the most prevalent concerns among male facelift patients.

MALE FACELIFT RESULTS

A facelift for men can dramatically improve facial contours and skin tone in the midface and lower face. Results can last for a decade or more.

Male facelift results can include increased self-confidence. Many patients express that this shift enhanced their quality of life by positively impacting their general outlook, career, and/or relationships.

ARE THERE NON-SURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION OPTIONS FOR MEN?

Dr. Emer has earned widespread recognition as a pioneer in non-surgical facial sculpting and facial rejuvenation for men. His leading-edge combination treatments draw men to his medical practice from around the world. These less invasive techniques provide subtle, yet noticeable improvements that can be maintained with regular retreatments.
Non-surgical alternatives to facelift surgery can be a great option for men who:

  • Are not ready to have an invasive cosmetic procedure
  • Have early or mild signs of facial aging
  • Prefer minimal-to-no-downtime procedures
  • For medical or other reasons are not good candidates for facelift surgery

WHAT IS THE COST OF MALE FACELIFT SURGERY?

Facelifts for men vary in price based on the extent of the procedure. While male facelift patients tend to have similar aesthetic concerns, each of their procedures will be tailored to their unique anatomy and designed to preserve their distinct look. In general, the more complicated and time-intensive a patient’s facelift surgery is, the higher the overall cost.
