WHAT IS KYBELLA?
Kybella is also used off-label to target small, persistent fat deposits throughout the body. It can provide significant improvements in problem areas like the upper arms and above the knees.
Fat removal with Kybella generally requires more than one injection session for optimal results. The number of injections and the number of sessions needed varies based on the patient’s unique anatomy and fat reduction goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for KYBELLA?
Procedure Details
How Does KYBELLA Work?
Kybella contains a substance called deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid causes irreparable damage to fat cells, prompting the body’s natural processes for excreting the dead cells. Once the targeted fat cells have been eliminated from the body, patients will notice reduced volume in the treated area.

If you are a good candidate for Kybella, Dr. Emer’s staff will help you schedule an injection session. You’ll also be briefed on how to prepare for your appointment.
PROCEDURE
Dr. Emer will select and mark the injection sites. Then, the treatment site will be sterilized. Next, he will perform the injections. The number of injections varies based on the size of the treatment area and how much fat is being targeted.
Many patients experience a short-lived stinging sensation after Kybella injections. Numbing cream helps to mitigate this discomfort, and ice packs can also be applied to soothe the area.
RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE
- Wearing a compression garment
- Applying ice packs
- Abstaining from vigorous activity for four to five days
- Avoiding excessive heat, including saunas and hot tubs
Bruising and swelling are common after a Kybella session. While many patients experience mild swelling and are back at work within a day of their injections, swelling can be more severe and longer lasting for others. Bruising can be concealed with makeup and usually dissipates within 7-14 days.
Tenderness and/or discomfort can occur. Dr. Emer can recommend an over-the-counter pain medication if necessary.

How Soon Will I See My Kybella Results?
You’ll need some patience to see results with Kybella due to the role your body plays in removing the treated fat cells. One contributing factor is that the body needs several weeks to process and expel the damaged fat cells.
Additionally, to avoid overwhelming the body’s systems, all of the unwanted fat in the treatment area cannot be targeted in one injection session. Instead, Kybella treatments typically involve multiple treatment sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Noticeable improvements can be expected after two to four Kybella injection sessions.

How Long Do Kybella Results Last?
Kybella is a permanent fat reduction method. Once the body has expelled the dead fat cells, they are gone for good. However, if you gain weight after Kybella, the fat cells that remain in the area can increase in size and compromise your results. An active lifestyle and healthy diet are key to maintaining your improved contours.
IS KYBELLA THE BEST TREATMENT FOR ME?
First, he will identify what is responsible for the extra volume beneath your skin. The size and shape of the chin, skin elasticity, and fatty tissue can all play a role in creating the appearance of a double chin.
Kybella is intended to improve the appearance of a double chin caused by excess fat. There are several reasons a person may have unwanted submental fat, including:
- Aging – As we age, fat often accumulates in this area.
- Genetics – Some people are genetically predisposed to storing fat under the chin. No matter how fit and healthy they are, fat deposits in this area will persist unless treated.
- Weight gain – The body may store excess fat under the chin in response to weight gain.
Loose skin in the lower face and neck can also contribute to the appearance of a double chin. In these cases, Kybella may not be an ideal treatment option unless it is performed in conjunction with a skin tightening procedure.
Some patients lack jawline definition due to an underprojected chin. Chin augmentation can help to resolve the appearance of under-chin fullness in many cases. Kybella can be used to put the final touches on a new jawline shape after a chin implant procedure, allowing the patient to avoid liposuction.
The Dr. Emer Difference
How Does Dr. Emer Do KYBELLA Differently?
Dr. Emer has built his esteemed reputation as a facial and body sculpting expert by developing combination treatments based on a holistic perspective. When it comes to addressing submental fullness with Kybella, he looks beyond the jawline to factor in the midface, upper face, and neck as well. Additional facial sculpting treatments are often recommended to create optimal proportions and ensure a balanced, natural-looking result.
Dr. Emer also combines Kybella with complementary, non-surgical jawline contouring treatments for maximum improvements. He often pairs Kybella with non-invasive skin tightening procedures, such as radiofrequency-based Thermage. To further define the jawline and rejuvenate the neck, he may recommend:
- Neuromodulator injections – Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are injectable neurotoxin treatments that can help to reshape and define the jawline and restore a more youthful-looking neck. Dr. Emer often employs neuromodulators to shrink enlarged jaw muscles (masseter muscles) in female patients who desire his trademark “heart-shaped” facial appearance. Neuromodulators can also reduce the appearance of neck bands.
- Dermal fillers – Dermal fillers can be used to improve the projection of the chin and establish a more balanced facial appearance and more aesthetic jawline.
- FaceTite – Loose skin in the neck area is a common complaint among men and women, especially as the aging process progresses. Rather than undergoing a surgical procedure, patients with moderate skin laxity can often resolve their concerns with a less invasive FaceTite procedure. FaceTite delivers radiofrequency energy under the skin, causing it to contract for a tightening effect that can last a year or more.
- Thread lifting – Dr. Emer can perform a threading procedure to subtly lift tissue in the lower face.
