WHAT IS RADIESSE?

Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler that contains calcium hydroxyapatite (CAHA) microspheres. It is FDA-approved to treat wrinkles and lost volume in the face and hands.

It has a thick, gel-like consistency that makes it ideal for hand rejuvenation and for moderate to severe facial creases around the mouth and nose. Dr. Emer uses Radiesse for a variety of off-label applications as well. He frequently injects Radiesse for:

  • Cheek augmentation – Radiesse can fill, sculpt, and define the cheekbones for a beautiful facial contouring effect.
  • Chin enhancement – Radiesse injections can be used to smooth out chin wrinkles and/or to augment the chin. Dr. Emer can inject Radiesse on the bone for shaping, lifting, and increased projection.
  • Marionette lines – The vertical lines that form between the chin and mouth, often referred to as marionette lines, are frequently treated with Radiesse.
  • Nasolabial folds – Also called smile lines or laugh lines, these creases extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth and can be effectively resolved with Radiesse.
  • Jowls – Early signs of jowling, or heaviness and sagging, on the sides of the chin, can be corrected with Radiesse to improve jawline contours.
  • Temple augmentation – A sunken look in the temples can add years to your facial appearance. Dr. Emer can inject Radiesse to replace lost volume in this area and refine your facial shape.
  • Aged hands – Age-related volume loss in the backs of the hands causes our veins and tendons to be more noticeable. Hand rejuvenation with Radiesse lifts and fills the skin to restore a plump, youthful appearance.
  • Non-surgical butt lift – Dr. Emer can use Radiesse in combination with fillers like Bellafill and Sculptra to help patients achieve a perkier, fuller butt without the downtime of plastic surgery.
  • Hip dips – With Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill, Dr. Emer can fill hip dips to round out the hip contours. Radiesse offers the fastest results, though Sculptra and Bellafill can provide longer-lasting improvements.

Am I a Good Candidate for RADIESSE?

Healthy men and women whose cosmetic goals include adding significant volume, minimizing wrinkles, and boosting collagen production can be excellent candidates for Radiesse. This injectable is also considered a good treatment option for patients who have lost facial fat due to HIV.

Although patients of many ages can benefit from Radiesse, the majority of candidates are between the ages of 30 and 60. This is because patients 30 years old and older are more likely than younger patients to have unwanted, visible signs of decreased collagen, such as wrinkles. Additionally, many patients over the age of 60 have considerable skin laxity and drooping tissue that is often better addressed with facial plastic surgery.

Radiesse is a versatile injectable with many applications. However, it is not ideal for every patient’s needs. Some treatment goals may necessitate alternative non-surgical or surgical interventions for best results. It is necessary to consult with a qualified provider like Dr. Emer to find out if it is right for you.

During your consultation with Dr. Emer, he will evaluate your aesthetic concerns and chat with you about your desired treatment outcome. He will also ask you some questions about your health. It is important to answer his questions as completely as possible, so he can create a safe treatment plan for you.

Radiesse is not suitable for patients with certain allergies and medical conditions or for those with active skin infections. Women who are pregnant or nursing are not considered candidates for Radiesse injections. In these cases, Dr. Emer will assess your candidacy for other available treatments.

Radiesse Vs. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Which Is Right for Me?

When it comes to determining which dermal filler is right for you, Dr. Emer will consider the quality of your skin, your specific contouring goals, and your personal preferences. Every dermal filler is distinct in its formulation, consistency, and intended applications. Treatment recommendations are based on which product will work best for your needs rather than from a perspective of one filler being better or worse than another.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as those in the Juvederm and Restylane families, are among the most popular facial fillers. These fillers capitalize on the hydrating effects of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that becomes less available as we age.

While both hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and Radiesse can add volume to smooth out folds and wrinkles and improve facial contours, Radiesse’s CAHA microspheres set it apart from HA fillers in some important ways:

9

Collagen stimulation

Unlike HA fillers, Radiesse’s active ingredient works to encourage increased collagen formation in the treated area. Collagen is the most important ally you can have against aging skin, as it provides structure to keep skin firm and resilient. Radiesse can help mitigate the inevitable loss of collagen that occurs as we get older.

9

Structural matrix

The CAHA microspheres in Radiesse create a supportive scaffold under the skin that gives the treated area form in a way that HA fillers cannot. This characteristic makes Radiesse ideal for chin and cheek augmentation.

It should be noted that due to Radiesse’s consistency, it is not used for lip augmentation or to treat areas with thinner, more delicate skin, like around the eyes. HA fillers are a better choice for such treatment sites.

9

Longer-lasting results

Radiesse involves less frequent retreatment to maintain improvements than the majority of HA fillers. The effects of many HA fillers only last about six months, while Radiesse results can last up to two years.

For some patients, such as those who are new to fillers and may not want to commit to a new look for potentially two years, HA fillers can be more appealing because their effects wear off sooner. HA fillers can even be dissolved using a product called hyaluronidase for a complete treatment reversal.

Procedure Details

How Does RADIESSE Work?

Local anesthesia can be used to ensure the injections are well-tolerated. Lidocaine can also be added to Radiesse injections to further minimize discomfort.

Antiseptic will be applied to the treatment area before Dr. Emer performs the injections.

Next, Dr. Emer will identify optimal injection sites by applying his advanced knowledge of anatomy and his experience with cosmetic injectables. This discernment is essential for providing safe Radiesse treatments that deliver incredible, natural-looking results.

Dr. Emer will then inject a precise amount of Radiesse at each carefully selected injection site. A pinching sensation may occur as Radiesse is injected, but the procedure is not considered particularly painful.

Radiesse can be injected using a thin needle. However, Dr. Emer typically uses a cannula when performing Radiesse injections. A cannula is a thin tube with a blunt tip that is associated with decreased post-procedure bruising and swelling.

Dr. Emer may massage the treated area after your injections for refinements in shape and symmetry. Once your procedure is complete, aftercare instructions will be reviewed with you.

What to Expect after Radiesse Injections

After Radiesse injections, you will be able to go about the rest of your day as normal, for the most part. You will need to refrain from strenuous physical exertion and avoid exposing the treatment site(s) to sunlight, tanning beds, and heat for a minimum of 24 hours.

For some patients, the injection sites are tender and/or red for a day or two after the procedure. Swelling may occur but typically does not last more than a few days. These symptoms can be eased by applying ice packs or taking over-the-counter pain relief medication as directed by Dr. Emer.

Does Radiesse Work Immediately?

You will notice the plumping and filling effects of Radiesse right away. The gel-like component of Radiesse adds instant volume, which is supported and stabilized by the microspheres.

Within seven days of your injections, Radiesse will have taken its full effect. Over time, Radiesse will provide additional improvements in the firmness and fullness of the skin as it works to optimize your body’s collagen formation process.

How Long DOES RADIESSE Last?

Your body will have a unique response to Radiesse, so you may need retreatment sooner or later than other patients would. The longevity of Radiesse can be affected by the location of the treatment area, the amount of Radiesse that was injected, and whether you follow Dr. Emer’s aftercare instructions.

Some patients enjoy their Radiesse results for as long as 24 months before they need another injection session. Other patients opt for maintenance treatments every 9-12 months.
