What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a broad term that refers to darkened skin. There are various causes of hyperpigmentation that result in different types of discoloration of the skin and irregular skin tone.
Hyperpigmentation can affect skin anywhere on the body and can appear in large or small patches. While hyperpigmentation and discoloration are most often not harmful, patients can experience self-consciousness due to their uneven skin tone.
With an extensive history of treating a wide range of skin conditions, Dr. Emer has developed safe, effective combination treatments for hyperpigmentation. His protocols for this skin condition aim to:
- Promote healing
- Prevent or slow the development of hyperpigmentation
- Lighten dark patches
- Achieve softer, smoother skin
- Improve confidence in your appearance
- Reduce the need for heavy makeup that causes blocked pores
- Provide gentle, natural results
- Reduce facial scarring, freckles, and dark spots

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
To understand how Dr. Emer’s hyperpigmentation treatments work, it is important to understand what causes hyperpigmentation. Melanin is produced by your skin cells and is a pigment that gives your skin its color.
When natural melanin production is disrupted, changes in skin color can result. Pregnancy, certain medications, and sun exposure are a few factors that can cause increased melanin and darkened skin.
Predominant in individuals with darker skin tones, melasma is one type of hyperpigmentation. Melasma manifests as dark patches and freckle-like spots on the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, and above the upper lip as well as on the forearms and neck.
Sunspots are a common type of discoloration that results from sun exposure. Also called liver spots, sunspots most often affect the hands and face.
Injury or inflammation can also cause darkened skin. Superficial burns and acne are two examples of inflammation-related causes of hyperpigmentation.
How Does Dr. Emer Treat Hyperpigmentation, Discoloration, and Melasma?
Dr. Emer takes a combination treatment approach to resolving skin discoloration. His patient-specific protocols are meticulously designed based on the patient’s unique skin concerns and skin tone. Treatment options include:
Chemical Peels
To kickstart the melasma or hyperpigmentation treatment process, Dr. Emer begins with a non-inflammatory, salicylic acid-based mask called Cosmelan. Cosmelan causes the face to peel over the course of two weeks. Cosmelan targets pigmentation, smooths the skin, prepares the cells for subsequent laser treatments, and inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme in the melanin formation process.
Alternatively, Dr. Emer may recommend the Enlighten peel, which is a gentler version of Cosmelan.
Laser Treatments
Laser devices can be used to improve many skin conditions by delivering controlled heat. For hyperpigmentation, Dr. Emer uses low-energy, low-density laser treatments such as:
Clear + Brilliant – This non-ablative laser directly addresses skin color and is safe for nearly all skin types.
Aerolase – The Aerolase laser can target hyperpigmentation on the surface as well as deeper pigmentation. Aerolase is approved for use on all skin types.
Laser Genesis – This gentle, non-ablative laser can treat melasma and other types of hyperpigmentation. In the hands of an experienced professional like Dr. Emer, who understands how to gradually increase the energy being delivered to the skin, Laser Genesis can be safely used on all skin tones.
Laser treatments are often followed by in-office microneedling and chemical peels, which can reduce the risk of rebound hyperpigmentation.
Fractional Radiofrequency Treatment
Venus Viva is a fractional radiofrequency (RF) treatment that is particularly suited for treating hyperpigmentation. Venus Viva uses a low-energy method of ablating the surface of the skin and is highly adjustable, so Dr. Emer can safely use Venus Viva on all skin types and skin tones. This versatile device can be used on skin throughout the body.
The Venus Viva device has tiny pins which create micro-channels in the skin. Nanofractional RF energy travels through the microchannels to heat the deeper layers of the skin without burning the surface of the skin.
As a result of the pinpoint wounds and the RF heat, the skin’s natural healing response is stimulated. Collagen production increases to restore smoother, healthier skin and improve skin texture.
Venus Viva provides permanent improvements. It typically takes three to six treatment sessions to achieve optimal results. Periodic maintenance treatments are advised to keep your skin looking its best.
Microneedling with PRP
Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be used with Venus Viva to provide enhanced improvements in skin tone. Microneedling uses small needles to puncture the skin’s surface in order to initiate the body’s healing process.
PRP is applied to the skin after the microneedling process. Microneedling allows for deeper penetration and improved absorption of PRP for maximum benefits.
Dermalinfusion
SilkPeel Dermalinfusion, when infused with vitamin C and Lumixyl, can also brighten the skin and improve pigmentation, acne scars, sun spots, and discoloration. Dermalinfusion combines three treatments into one. It works to exfoliate the skin, vacuum away dead skin cells and debris, and infuse the skin with a serum formulated to treat hyperpigmentation.
Dr. Emer can adjust the Dermalinfusion device settings to safely treat most skin tones and skin types. Regular treatment sessions, as recommended by Dr. Emer, can help you maintain a clear, even complexion.
Daily Sun Protection and Skincare Protocols
Dr. Emer’s primary course of at-home treatment for hyperpigmentation is a tailored sun protection and skin care regimen. His hyperpigmentation skin care protocols incorporate the healing attributes of retinol, hydroquinone, kojic acid, glycolic acid, and vitamin C. He advises patients to be diligent about sun protection since sun exposure can cause and worsen hyperpigmentation.
