Microneedling is a safe and effective non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that can help reduce signs of wrinkles, diminish scarring and sun spots, and tighten loose or sagging skin. In Beverly Hills, Dr. Jason Emer, a skincare pioneer and board-certified dermatologist, provides specialized microneedling treatments for acne scarring, anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, and many other skin concerns.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that restores smoother, more youthful skin. Microneedling is also referred to as collagen induction therapy since it encourages the production of this vital protein in order to rejuvenate the skin. Collagen plays a key role in keeping the skin plump, firm, and healthy.
Dr. Emer includes microneedling in many of his patients’ maintenance treatment regimens for optimal collagen production and overall skin revitalization. Microneedling can be performed as an alternative or complement to laser treatments and deep chemical peels, which were the primary methods of rejuvenating the skin in the past.
Microneedling and microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) employ newer cosmetic technologies that can provide remarkable improvements in the appearance of the skin. This procedure is often recommended to treat enlarged pores, minimize scars, even the complexion, and tighten the skin with less risk than laser treatments.
Right for you?
Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
Dr. Emer’s microneedling treatments can help almost anyone achieve noticeably refreshed, glowing skin. Patients of most skin types can be excellent candidates for microneedling treatments, regardless of age.
Microneedling aids the skin in building new tissue, so patients with both thick and thin skin can experience improvements in skin texture. Individuals with scars from acne or injury are also good candidates for this treatment, which can help to remodel the scar tissue.
Dr. Emer will meet with you in a private consultation before scheduling your microneedling treatment. The consultation allows him to assess your skin type and skin concerns in order to determine the best course of treatment for you. Patients with active skin infections and/or certain medical conditions may be better candidates for alternative methods of skin rejuvenation.
Traditionally in the past lasers have been the primary form of rejuvenating the skin along with deep chemical peels on the face. Newer technologies with microneedling and microneedling with radio frequency can give improvements in the skin in terms of pores, scars, complexion and skin tone, and even skin tightening more than we’ve ever seen before with less risk.
HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING TRANSFORM YOUR SKIN?
Microneedling is a versatile cosmetic treatment that can resolve many common skin concerns. Benefits of microneedling include:
Kickstarts collagen production
Collagen is the body’s age-reversing protein compound that helps seal in moisture and ensures a smooth, radiant complexion. As we age, the body’s production of collagen decreases. Microneedling causes controlled trauma, which triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response and creates an increase in collagen production to restore a youthful glow.
Helps correct facial scarring
Dr. Emer is renowned for the way he uses microneedling as part of his approach in treating acne scars. He often performs microneedling with radiofrequency to effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars. Dr. Emer’s patients enjoy significant improvement to their acne scars with no negative side effects as a result of microneedling treatments. Microneedling can also be performed to minimize scars from injuries.
Other types of skin corrections
Microneedling can actually be performed head-to-toe and on all skin types to address pigmentation issues, repair sun damage, reduce the appearance of pores, and tighten the skin.
Speeds up the absorption of topical serums
After a microneedling session, the skin is more receptive to the absorption of serums, nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins. Enhanced absorption is beneficial when it comes to fighting off free radical damage from the environment as well as the effects of stress and aging.
Helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines
Sagging, wrinkled skin can be revitalized through microneedling, while fine lines, creases, and folds can be gently reversed. What’s more, microneedling can be more cost-effective than some laser and light treatments, and it can be performed more frequently.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an increasingly popular, natural method of accelerating healing and encouraging optimal cellular function. PRP is created from the patient’s own blood.
To further enrich the protein and growth factor-rich serum, Dr. Emer adds ACell to the PRP. The PRP and ACell serum is applied topically to the skin after microneedling to help the skin rebuild while reducing inflammation and redness.
Applying PRP after microneedling allows for deeper penetration of the serum into the skin via the tiny punctures. The skin’s enhanced ability to absorb topical serums after microneedling also makes this combination of treatments incredibly effective and encourages a quick recovery from the microneedling treatment.
SKIN GYM TREATMENT: VAMPIRE FACIAL
Microneedling the skin with natural growth factors and stem cells (such as A-cell) can enhance the outcomes of laser and radiofrequency treatments, accelerate the healing process, and reduce downtime, redness and swelling.
This treatment is Dr. Emer’s go-to treatment for acne scar patients who have darker skin tones. Because this treatment combines radio frequency and microneedling, it is highly effective in reducing the appearance of acne scars by stimulating new collagen and by breaking up scar tissue.
State of the Art Microneedling Devices
Which Microneedling Device Is Best for Me?
Dr. Emer takes incredible care to select the ideal microneedling device for each patient. He considers the patient’s skin tone, skin type, and aesthetic goals in order to determine which device can provide the most effective treatment. Two of Dr. Emer’s go-to microneedling devices are SkinPen and Amiea Med.
SkinPen is the perfect treatment for younger patients who want to prepare their skin for improved penetration of cosmeceuticals, fillers, radiofrequency treatments, and laser treatments. This portable microneedling device works well with other treatments and does not require recovery time.
With SkinPen, twelve microneedles penetrate the dermis to stimulate natural collagen production. Increased collagen production is not only essential for anti-aging and general skin rejuvenation, but it is also integral to Dr. Emer’s approach to treating acne scars.

With AMIEA MED
Dr. Emer often uses the Amiea Med for patients who wish to treat wrinkles and acne scars. This innovative microneedling device has six needles and delivers 900 punctures per second.
Its precise method of puncturing the skin is ideal for treating challenging areas, smoothing out skin texture, and tightening loose skin. Each entry is powerful, yet gentle.
Dr. Emer’s skill and experience with this advanced device allows him to achieve optimal improvements. To ensure even, aesthetic results, Dr. Emer employs a “circular” technique with the Amiea Med device.
Beyond improving overall skin tone and texture, benefits of Amiea Med microneedling include:
- No ablation of the epidermis – Microneedling does not remove any layers of skin, so there is less risk of side effects, less pain, and less healing time compared to ablative treatments.
- Clinically proven efficiency – A leading cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Emer conducts extensive research before using any new device or technique on his patients.
- Safe to use on all skin types – While laser skin treatments can pose a risk of discoloration for patients of certain skin tones, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is minimal with Amiea Med.
- Melanocytes are not destroyed – Amiea Med does not disrupt these specialized skin cells that are essential to maintaining an even skin tone.
- No scarring – The tiny micro-wounds created by the Amiea Med device will heal without leaving permanent post-treatment marks.
What to Expect
During a Microneedling Procedure
Step Inside Dr. Emer’s Process
Dr. Emer performs microneedling treatments at his relaxing, state-of-the-art medical practice in West Hollywood. The length of a microneedling procedure depends on the number and size of the targeted areas. Most microneedling treatments can be completed in about 30 minutes.
First, a numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. Once the area is numb, Dr. Emer will begin the microneedling procedure.
Dr. Emer will use a portable, handheld microneedling device to expertly needle the targeted sites to a predetermined depth based on the patient’s unique skin concerns and skin type. The miniature needles cause fine pinpoint bleeding, which triggers the body’s healing response, including the stimulation of collagen production. Pinpoint bleeding is important because this indicates the needles are reaching the depth where collagen production occurs in the skin.
Dr. Emer typically follows microneedling with the application of topical cosmeceuticals, natural growth factors, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and/or stem cells (ACell). This revolutionary, combination approach has been shown to improve outcomes, activate healing, reduce redness, and assist with product absorption.
What to Expect
Microneedling does not require a lengthy recovery, but you will need to follow Dr. Emer’s aftercare instructions to achieve maximum improvements. Plan to avoid sun exposure, swimming, and excessive sweating for a short period of time, as directed by Dr. Emer, after your microneedling procedure.
Redness and swelling can occur at the treatment site in the first day or two after a microneedling session. Dr. Emer will explain the best products and methods for you to use to cleanse, moisturize, and protect the treated skin to mitigate these symptoms and ensure optimal results.
Dr. Emer has treated Adam over the last 8 months with a combination of lasers like Clear + Brilliant, Microneedling with PRP and Accutane, an oral medication used to treat severe nodular acne.
How Does Dr. Emer Do Microneedling Differently?
Dr. Jason Emer is an expert in facial and body rejuvenation who constantly strives to exceed his patients’ expectations and push the aesthetics field into an even more effective and efficient future. His approach to restoring healthy, youthful skin involves customized, combination treatments, and microneedling is often a key element of these advanced, world-renowned protocols.
In addition to using PRP in combination with microneedling to enhance results and shorten healing time, Dr. Emer combines microneedling with a range of other cosmetic treatments to build collagen, reduce inflammation, minimize scars, eliminate hyperpigmentation, and resolve many other common skin conditions.
Laser skin treatments – Dr. Emer’s aging prevention protocols often pair microneedling with laser skin treatments. The tiny channels created by the microneedles work to enhance improvements in collagen production as well as providing for optimal penetration and absorption of PRP and other nourishing topical serums that accelerate healing after aggressive laser procedures. This combination treatment approach has helped numerous patients in Beverly Hills transform their skin and achieve beautiful, long-lasting improvements.
Microneedling RF – Dr. Emer also employs microneedling with radiofrequency (RF). Microneedling RF devices deliver controlled RF heat as the microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface to promote skin tightening and provide an additional boost in collagen production. Microneedling RF can be an ideal treatment for skin affected by burns and other types of scars.
At-home skincare – To enhance and extend the results of in-office microneedling treatments, Dr. Emer also provides personalized recommendations for at-home skin care. He may recommend at-home dermarolling and/or a specific skincare regimen of high-quality topical products from his Emerage Skin product line.
How Much Does Microneedling Cost?
The price of microneedling varies based on the frequency of treatment and the size of the targeted area. Since there is no one-size-fits-all solution for rejuvenated skin, Dr. Emer will develop a unique treatment protocol and maintenance schedule for you. Once he has created your treatment plan, he will review it and all associated costs with you.
