WHAT IS JAWLINE CONTOURING?
Arguably one of the most sought-after, trending cosmetic procedures of our time, jawline contouring creates the “snatched” jawline/neck made popular by the celebrities and models using beautifying filters on Instagram and Snapchat. A snatched jawline is characterized by a tight, well-defined, razor-sharp, sculpted jawline and neck and a slim, “heart-shaped,” tapered lower face. Under the care of world-renowned facial sculpting expert, Dr. Emer, aesthetic, proportionate features in the lower face can often be achieved using strategic combinations of complementary non-surgical procedures.
Surgical jawline contouring may be necessary for optimal results if a patient has considerable skin laxity and/or excess fat. Dr. Emer works closely with his team of Beverly Hills plastic surgeons in these cases to plan the most effective combination of surgical and non-surgical interventions.

DR. EMER’S APPROACH TO JAWLINE CONTOURING
Patients often ask Dr. Emer which procedures can create a chiseled, refined jawline with minimal downtime and lasting results. The answer: It depends on the patient.
Dr. Emer develops personalized, long-term treatment plans for each of his patients to help them address sagging in the lower face and neck, submental fat (under the chin), and lack of contouring and definition in the jawline and neck. A non-surgical approach to creating a snatched, defined neck and jawline often requires a combination of:
- injectable fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, and Bellafill
- injectable collagen simulators like Sculptra
- cosmetic “freezers” or neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and
- Jeuveau
- non-surgical thread lifting
- non-invasive radiofrequency devices (Thermage, InMode Forma/Contoura,Exilis Ultra, and Venus Legacy)
- microneedling with radiofrequency (Fractora, Morpheus8, and Intensif)
- ultrasound devices like Ultherapy
- internal radiofrequency devices like Renuvion and FaceTite /AccuTite
- non-surgical submental fat reduction with Kybella (with or without CoolSculpting and truSculpt iD)
Although injectable fillers are often used to build volume in hollow areas, in the hands of a skilled sculptor like Dr. Jason Emer, certain fillers can also be used for facial contouring. With the appropriate technique and a subtle approach, fillers can help create a chiseled jawline, define the mandibular angle (creating a clear distinction between the face and neck), accentuate the chin, and sculpt the lower face (including the marionette lines and mouth corners), all with minimal to no downtime.
To strengthen your profile and help prevent “jowls” or lower face sagging, Dr. Emer uses injectable fillers like Restylane, Radiesse, Revanesse Versa, Juvederm Voluma/Vollure, and Bellafill to give subtle enhancements to the jawline. Using a cannula to limit pain and swelling, Dr. Emer injects on the bone at strategic points to get more lift and shaping, resulting in a contoured lower face and a structured jawline.
Sculptra, a natural collagen stimulator, can also assist in jawline definition and contouring. This filler provides volume and promotes long-term collagen production.
Injectable relaxers (or neuromodulators) like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau work by blocking receptors that send nerve signals for muscles to contract. Decreasing the movement of the treated muscles helps to reduce their size. Neuromodulators can be a great option for female patients who have a fuller, broader, or squared-off jawline—and , in particular, those who have TMJ or grind their teeth and therefore see enlargement along the back of the jaw or angle of the jaw.
Dr. Emer can inject Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau into the masseter muscle to “freeze” or relax the overworked muscle. The result is a slimmer and more rounded jawline and a more “heart-shaped” face for those seeking facial contouring.
Results from injectable “freezers” typically take up to two weeks to appear, and they last about two to three months. Since your body is constantly creating new receptors and neurotransmitters, periodic retreatment is necessary to maintain consistent results.
Dr. Emer improves mild skin laxity and the early signs of skin sagging with NovaThreads and Silhouette InstaLift. These state-of-the-art thread lifting techniques subtly elevate facial tissue to restore a more youthful look without the need for cosmetic surgery. In addition to providing a moderate lift in the treated area, NovaThreads and Silhouette InstaLift work long-term to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production to improve the overall tone and tightness of your skin.
Though some immediate improvements may be visible after your thread lift, patients should expect to see gradual improvements over six to twelve weeks as the body creates a new, stronger scaffold of collagen under your skin. Dr. Emer often combines thread lifting with other cosmetic treatments to enhance the results.
Dr. Emer frequently uses external radiofrequency (RF) devices to refresh the skin of the lower face and neck. The heat generated by the RF energy stimulates collagen and fibroblast cell production, resulting in reduced sagging, improved texture, and smoother, tighter skin over time.
RF energy also slows the aging process by decelerating the degeneration of collagen. With regular treatments, you can maintain a youthful lift and contour for an extended period of time.
Thermage is an FDA-approved, external RF device that is clinically proven to help reduce skin laxity, smooth wrinkles, reduce the appearance of mild cellulite, and rejuvenate the skin with natural-looking, lifted results. Dr. Emer can use the Thermage system to tighten and define the jawline, neck, and face. It can also be used to improve and tighten crepey skin on various areas of the body, including the knees, elbows, chest, and buttocks.
Additional energy devices such as Venus Legacy, Venus Viva, InMode Forma/Contoura, and BTL Exilis Ultra (which simultaneously transmits both radiofrequency and ultrasound energy) can also be used either independently or in combination to promote skin tightening on the face, jawline, and neck as well as the arms, thighs, buttocks, and chest/breasts.
For patients who seek more dramatic results than external RF energy and ultrasound energy devices can achieve, minimally invasive procedures such as InMode FaceTite and AccuTite can be an effective, non-surgical alternative.
FaceTite and AccuTite utilize advanced RF technology to internally tighten the skin in the lower face and neck, giving the appearance of a Mini Facelift and Neck Lift. During the procedure, a cannula is inserted beneath the skin, and thermal energy is distributed evenly to the sublayers of the skin. With multiple passes, Dr. Emer is able to tighten the skin and contour the lower face, jawline, and jowls.
To achieve even more substantial outcomes with skin tightening and contouring in the neck and jawline, Dr. Emer employs Renuvion (formerly J-Plasma), a powerful internal RF skin tightening device. Harnessing the power of helium plasma radiofrequency, Dr. Emer directs this energy beneath the surface of the skin to heat the internal tissue in a safe and controlled manner. The heat causes loose skin to contract, and it stimulates collagen-building long-term. Numerous passes with Renuvion can create significant improvement, often eliminating the need for surgical skin removal.
Part of sculpting a snatched jawline is reducing unwanted fat under the chin (submental fat) and along the jawline, such as the “jowls.” As the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for diminishing your stubborn double chin, Kybella dissolves fat with little downtime while simultaneously providing mild skin tightening, neck rejuvenation, and jawline contouring.
Kybella is comprised of synthetic deoxycholic acid (a naturally occurring bile acid in the body). This revolutionary, 15-minute treatment targets fat cells and gradually breaks down and absorbs the fat.
For best results, our patients typically undergo three to six rounds of Kybella injections over a six month period to reduce fat and help tighten skin. Dr. Emer also often complements Kybella with non-invasive fat reduction procedures, such as:
CoolSculpting for Jawline Contouring – CoolSculpting is a one-of-a-kind, non-invasive fat removal treatment that works by freezing targeted fat cells. Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (or frozen), the cells die. The cells are then naturally processed and eliminated from the body over the course of about two to six months, leaving you with slimmer jawline contours.
truSculpt iD for Jawline Contouring – truSculpt iD delivers pulses of precisely calibrated RF energy below the skin’s surface to heat fat cells in the lower face and neck. The heat-damaged fat cells are then removed from the body permanently through the body’s natural processes. The subdermal heat has the added benefit of stimulating collagen production in the treated area, prompting skin tightening, contouring, and toning.
SURGICAL JAWLINE CONTOURING
While many patients prefer less invasive solutions for achieving a sculpted lower face, non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments are not right for everyone. Cosmetic surgery can address more advanced signs of aging, severe asymmetry, botched procedures, and other more complex conditions, and it provides longer-lasting results.
Dr. Emer and his team of plastic surgeons offer more intensive jawline contouring options that can provide natural-looking, aesthetic results for many years.
If you are not a good candidate for non-surgical jawline contouring, Dr. Emer may recommend:
- HD Liposuction of the neck, jawline, and chin
- Buccal fat reduction surgery
- Jawline/masseter reduction surgery
- Surgical chin implants
- Surgical facelift and/or neck lift
