WHAT IS ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is an advanced approach to nose surgery that allows us to provide natural-looking enhancements for patients of non-Western backgrounds. The goal of this procedure is to resolve a patient’s concerns with the shape and/or size of the nose while preserving an ethnically congruent facial appearance.

Patients often elect to undergo ethnic rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, though some patients are also seeking relief from medical conditions. If a patient suffers from obstructed nasal breathing, we can typically incorporate additional alterations to correct functional issues while addressing a patient’s aesthetic goals.

Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, is extraordinarily complicated, and ethnic rhinoplasty can involve additional challenges. Few surgeons are trained to effectively tailor rhinoplasty to the specific needs of patients of a wide range of ethnicities.

We have experience and knowledge as it relates to performing nose surgery for patients of Asian, African American, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern descent.

RIGHT FOR YOU?

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY?

We can treat patients of many cultural backgrounds with ethnic rhinoplasty. Most frequently, candidates are patients of Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, or African American heritage who want to address functional and/or cosmetic concerns with the nasal structure.
The nose must be fully developed for a patient to be a good candidate for this treatment. Younger patients will be advised to wait to undergo rhinoplasty until the nose has reached its adult size.
Patients who have certain medical conditions may not be suitable candidates for facial plastic surgery. It is essential that you provide complete health information, including a list of medications you take, at your consultation. This allows us to determine whether ethnic rhinoplasty is a safe option for you.

HOW IS ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY PERFORMED?

This is an outpatient procedure that takes two to three hours, on average. The length of your surgery will depend on the complexity of making the necessary adjustments to the nasal structure.

While each ethnic rhinoplasty procedure is unique, every nose surgery involves:

It is important that the patient remains in a restful, comfortable state throughout the procedure, so anesthesia must be administered.
We use an open rhinoplasty technique, which involves a small external incision in the tissue that separates the nostrils.
Based on the patient’s treatment goals, we will make precise alterations to the nasal cartilage and/or bone. If needed, we can graft cartilage from the patient’s rib to build up the internal structure and sculpt the desired nasal contours.
We will use internal sutures to secure the enhancements. We will then close the external incision with sutures to finish the procedure.

ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

Nose job recovery periods range from six to eight weeks. Under-eye bruising can occur for seven to 14 days post-op. Swelling and discomfort in the treatment area can be expected for two to three weeks after ethnic rhinoplasty surgery. At that point, most patients are feeling much more comfortable and confident about the appearance of the nose and will resume social activities.

If a patient’s job does not require heavy lifting or other physically demanding tasks, he or she should be able to return to work after about two weeks. Follow-up appointments allow us to assess how healing is progressing, so we can approve increased activity levels as it is safe to do so.

ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY RESULTS

Initial improvements will be noticeable after three to four weeks of healing. However, it will take up to twelve months for soft tissue swelling to completely subside and reveal the final outcome of your ethnic rhinoplasty. The results of this procedure can last a lifetime.

OUR APPROACH TO ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY

We meticulously plan each ethnic rhinoplasty, so we can account for key cultural features that affect the surgical approach. Anatomically, nasal structures and facial skin thickness differ from one ethnicity to another. Due to these variances, a rhinoplasty technique that works well for patients of a particular culture can have a profoundly different outcome for patients of other ethnic backgrounds.

We also give careful consideration to cultural standards of beauty and the patient’s unique aesthetic goals. We go to great lengths to gain an accurate understanding of a patient’s desired look, so we can plan and execute the appropriate adjustments.

HOW MUCH DOES ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY COST?

There is a high degree of customization involved with this procedure, so the price of ethnic rhinoplasty varies. The complexity of the surgery, anesthesia and facility fees, and other factors will affect the cost of your procedure. Pricing details for your ethnic rhinoplasty will be included with your personalized treatment plan.
