What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical approach to rejuvenating the mid-and lower face. The natural aging process can take a major toll on our facial tissues and muscles. Lost volume, sagging skin, folds, and creases can make us look tired, upset, and older than we feel.
Non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments can slow the aging process, but when a patient has advanced signs of aging, plastic surgery is likely needed to achieve significant improvements. For patients with considerable excess skin and drooping in the midface and lower face, Dr. Emer’s plastic surgeons can perform a full facelift to:
- Tighten facial muscles
- Excise loose skin
- Lift facial tissues
- Restore smoother, firmer skin

Am I a Good Candidate for A Facelift?
Dr. Emer and his expert team provide facelift services for both male and female patients of many ages. Ideal facelift patients are often in their 40’s, 50’s, or 60’s, though older patients can also be good candidates. The condition of the patient’s facial tissues and the patient’s overall health are the most important considerations for determining candidacy.
Facelift candidates will have considerable signs of aging throughout the face, such as loose, excess skin. Patients who have mild or moderate skin laxity in the face may be better candidates for non-invasive or minimally invasive facial rejuvenation treatments.
To find out if a facelift can help you restore more youthful facial contours, you will need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Emer. After evaluating your facial structure and tissue and learning about your medical history and desired outcome, Dr. Emer can develop a targeted treatment approach to meet your needs.
For Men & Women
Dr. Emer’s expert facelift services are for both male and female patients.
What Type of Facelift Is Best for Me?
While older facelift methods focused only on pulling skin tight and trimming the excess, modern facelift techniques address the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) to achieve far more significant and natural-looking improvements. The most common modern facelift surgeries are the SMAS lift and the deep plane facelift.
Both the deep plane and SMAS lift adjust the SMAS, and both require small incisions in front of the ear or inside the ear. The best facelift approach for you will be determined by the plastic surgeon based on your anatomy, skin quality, and overall aesthetic goals.
For patients who are satisfied with the appearance of the midface but have cosmetic concerns in the lower face, a mini facelift may be recommended. The mini facelift can resolve moderate jowls and sagging skin along the jawline to refresh the lower face with less downtime than a full facelift requires.
What Are the Benefits of a Full Facelift?
A full facelift can achieve dramatic improvements in the appearance of the midface and lower face. This procedure has a high patient satisfaction rate due to the many benefits it provides, such as:
- Tightening of loose jowls
- Tighter, firmer skin
- A boost in self-confidence
- Improved appearance of the neck
- Natural-looking outcome
- Refinement of the jawline
- Reduction in creases, folds, wrinkles and lines
- More youthful facial contours
- Roll back the clock 10-15 years
- Long-lasting results
Facelift Procedure: What to Expect
Your facelift will be performed at an accredited operating facility on an outpatient basis and will take two to four hours. Either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation can be administered depending on what you and the plastic surgeon determine is best for you.
The plastic surgeon will then make the necessary incisions to reposition and lift your facial tissues and muscles to achieve your desired look. The skin can then be redraped and excess skin removed. The last step of the surgery is to close and dress the incisions.
Facelift Recovery: What to Expect
Most patients are able to go home the same day as facelift surgery. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home and assist you around the house for the first day or so of your recovery.
You will be given personalized aftercare instructions, and it is very important to follow all of the guidelines to ensure optimal healing. You will need to keep your head elevated, avoid putting pressure on your ears, and eat a diet of soft foods as directed in the initial stage of your recovery.
Swelling, bruising, and tightness can be expected in the first days after your surgery. As healing progresses, these symptoms will subside.
You will need to attend follow-up appointments throughout the recovery process. These appointments allow our expert team to advise you on how and when it is safe to resume your regular activities.
Most patients can return to work and light activities after one or two weeks. After about a month, more vigorous activities are typically approved. Intense exercise and heavy lifting will not be advised until the healing process has progressed further.
Many patients notice some improvements right away, though it will take some time to see the full effects of your facelift procedure. Swelling and bruising will decrease over several weeks, gradually revealing your refreshed facial appearance.
It may take up to a year to arrive at your final results. Depending on how your body ages and your lifestyle choices, your full facelift results can last 10 years or more.
